This course is eligible for one hour of CE/CME for MDs, PAs, NPs, RNs, LPNs, LVNs, Social Workers, and Long Term Care Administrators.

Understanding and caring for patients who are within the LGBTQIA+ community requires that clinicians understand that there are unique needs that must be considered. This educational offering discusses the history of the LGBT community’s interactions with health care. It also explores current trends for this population to better understand their experiences that can improve care for these patients.

You will learn about the unique issues for elderly patients from the LGBT+ group including likelihood of being single, having children, living at poverty level, having issues with housing, and reports of victimization. It also clarifies terminology related to the differences between sex, gender, and sexual orientation which is essential in demonstrating respect and care for these individuals.

This presentation shows that LGBTQI+ represents a diverse group from different races, ethnicities, socioeconomic status, age, and geographical locations. It also gives examples of inclusive language that helps to build trust between this group of patients and health care professionals.
