Moving Beyond the Slogans: How to Build DEI Into Your Practice

This course is eligible for one hour of CE/CME for MDs, PAs, NPs, RNs, LPNs, LVNs, Social Workers, and Long Term Care Administrators.

This continuing education session on Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI), will be about building DEI into workplace practices. The meaning of Diversity Equity and Inclusion and its importance will be described. The audience will also learn about the difference of unconscious and conscious bias, the impact of biases or the barriers it creates to DEI practices, and how to reduce bias influences. Lastly this session will provide education for individuals and organizations on specific action steps to putting DEI into practice. To gain insight into the specific action steps one will learn through this session will include the audience asking themselves questions to reflect on, such as: Does one use an empathic perspective, even if they do not relate to the experiences of the patients they service? How does one react to meeting the needs of patients from different backgrounds? Does one have preconceived inclinations or beliefs about a person or different group of people?

 

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will describe the understanding of what Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion means and the importance of putting it into practice.
  • Participants will identify barriers in implementing DEI into practice.
  • Participants will describe three action steps to putting DEI into practice.

Alecia Middleton

Director of Health Equity and Inclusion - HCC

Dr. Alecia Middleton is the Director of Health Equity and Inclusion for AccentCare to provide access to career opportunities and services for underrepresented populations in need of Home Care, Hospice and Palliative Care. Dr. Middleton has a unique personal story of overcoming her learning disability of dyslexia to becoming a Doctor of Education. Dr. Middleton obtained her Education Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Central Michigan University in 2019. She also holds a Masters in Mental Health Counseling, and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Michigan State University. Dr. Middleton has over 19 years of experience in the mental health education field, program development, and community outreach. Dr. Middleton is currently a Licensed Professional Counselor in the State of Michigan and has a certification in Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM). Dr. Middleton also has trained experience in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (years before it became a trending movement), through the GLASSWING program. She prides herself on leading by example to foster an environment of belongingness and the celebration of diversity, such as her own. She also believes it is her duty to treat all patients and families with unconditional positive regard and commit to listening, learning, and advocating on their behalf, no matter their race, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, or disability. Dr. Middleton strives to continue enhancing awareness in various settings, on the importance of educational development, and mental and physical health.

AccentCare is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved as ACE providers.
