Understanding & Caring for the African American Patient

This course will explore the transformation needed by the healthcare community to provide greater insight and access to the African American community. Special attention will be given to determinates that influence health outcomes such as socio-economic factors, education, and historical mistrust. Participants will consider how to best align supportive services and utilize practical strategies to provide better quality healthcare experiences for the African American patient.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the importance of understanding and caring for African American patient
  • Identify barriers in access to care including but not limited to: socio-economic factors; education; resources; and historical mistrust between the African American and Health Care communities
  • Describe 2 strategies to assist in overcoming barriers in access to care for African American patients.

Presenter Information

Carlos D. Turner
Director of Health and Equity and Inclusion/HCC

Carlos D. Turner is a Director of Health Equity and Inclusion/HCC with AccentCare Hospice and Palliative Care. He is passionate about diversity and inclusion in healthcare and finding solutions to effectively care for and support every community, despite barriers and differences. He has over 20 years’ experience in healthcare supporting traditionally underserved communities.

During that time, he has advocated and supported communities as a licensed minister, hospital liaison, home health and hospice consultant, trainer, mentor, volunteer manger and volunteer. Carlos is a native of St. Louis, Missouri and received his B.S. from Missouri Baptist University.

He received his ministerial license from Aenon Bible College and presides as the Assistant Director of Ministerial Alliance at Faith Miracle Temple Church c/o Higher Ground International Ministries Inc.

AccentCare #1237 is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period 1/20/22 - 1/20/25.
