Caring for Today's Veteran in the Home Setting

This was recorded on 11/08/2022 and the target audience level is Beginner.

Today, there are 23.8 million living veterans with 37 million dependents. Together they represent 20% of the population. The needs of veterans (and their chosen families) are continually evolving. Honoring this unique population is a privilege that seeks professionals to remain agile to the changing needs.

While there are several common diagnoses represented in this population, defining health for a veteran patient includes a more holistic approach, requiring understanding of mental health and service-related traumas.

This course will focus upon the specific needs of serving veterans in the home setting along the continuum of care. Personal Care Services, Home Health, and Hospice caregivers and clinicians are encouraged to participate. Skills related to opening dialogue, assessing for service history and its impact, post-service healthcare experiences, and resources available to this population will be reviewed. A specific focus upon moral injury and the integrated response to trauma that is faced by Veterans will be explored.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will identify common diagnoses in Veterans.
  • Participants will distinguish common misconceptions in caring for this population.
  • Participants will define moral injury and the integrated response to trauma faced by Veterans.
  • Participants will learn skills for opening communication and assessing for service history.
  • Participants will review resources available for veterans and their personal caregivers.
