Healthcare has changed over the centuries and so has what patients and their caregivers expect from healthcare providers. Bedside manner was once considered a non-essential soft skill, but today it is synonymous with professionalism and a necessary part of medical expertise.

As technology advances and complexity of care continues to rise, healthcare providers need to enhance their bedside skills in cultural competency, emotional intelligence, and empathy. When visit times are compressed and virtual visits are here to stay, learning how to establish trust efficiently and effectively, will be a highly-valued skill by providers and their employers.

Learning Objectives:

  • Define bedside manner
  • Describe behaviors that demonstrate good bedside manner
  • Identify the benefits of good bedside manner to the clinician and the patient
  • Explore how clinicians learn effective bedside manner
